12 Sci-Fi/Fantasy Novels that are Uniquely American

What do Stephen King, Jim Butcher, & Neil Gaiman have in common other then being writers? Some of their books along with a few others landed on io9.com's list of sci-fi/ fantasy novels that are uniquely American. So take a look at the list and loose your self in the worlds of the only pratcicing Wizard PI in the country, Old Gods trying to stay relevant in a word that has past them by, and a Gunslinger descended from King Arthur on the hunt for a mythical Dark Tower that holds the secret of all reality. Trust me you won't be disappointed in the journey.

Book Club

Did you know that there was a book club in Locust. Not only that our book club is one of the most unique around!

Every month we feature a novel by a local author and when we meet to discuss the book the writer attends to answer any question our group has about the book. It's a great way to get a behind the scenes look at how a writer works and get a better understanding of the literary world.

We read from every genre so there is something for everyone and there is always coffee and treats available too!

Want to jump on board? Well for July we are reading The Last Day by renowned author John Ramsey Miller and will be meeting on Tuesday July 27th at 6:00pm. Stop in and grab a copy then come in that night for some great discussion!

See you there!!!

Author Saturday Tomorrow!

We wanted to remind everyone that we will be having our Monthly Author Saturday this weekend with both Shelley Stout and Lizzy Armentrout in attendance. Both authors will be in the store from 10:00am -2:00pm and we are really looking forward to it.

We first met Lizzy at the Locust festival early this year. She had the booth next to ours and was so much fun to talk too. She is so warm and funny I am sure everyone will love meeting her.

We also just reviews Shelley Stout's book, Radium Halos, this week and I found it to be a fascinating read. I loved how she was able to take us right into the past and bring humor to such a tragic event.

Hope you all can make it!

Book Review

Radium Halos

Author: Shelley Stout

Publisher : LibriFiles

ISBN: 9781448696222

North Carolina author Shelly Stout takes you into the past in Radium Halos to explore the tragic story of the Radium Dial Painters of the 1920’s. While a work of fiction, Stout based the book on true events and creates a lush tale that is both horrific and somehow humorous.

In 1923 16-year-old Helen Waterman and her sister Violet leave their home in little Belmont, North Carolina to travel to Ottawa, Illinois to gain work at the Radium Dial Company. As workers there, they paint watch and clock faces with glow-in-the-dark radium paint in order to help our troops. The predominantly female work force is told the paint is harmless and is even encouraged to lick their brushes to keep them sharp. Fifty years later Helen, interred in a mental hospital, tells her story of the people she has lost and the painful secret they all shared.

With her first person narrative, Stout adds a lightness and comedy to the terrible events that unfold around our characters. She draws you into their world, a frighteningly different time not too long in our own past. Radium Halos deftly blends historical fact and fiction and gives voice to thousands of women whose stories should never be forgotten.

Shelley Stout will be at Uwharrie Books Saturday June 19, 2010 10-2 to sign her book Radium Halos.

Radium Halos is available at Uwharrie Books in Locust.

Hi this is the official blog for Uwharrie books and for our first post I thought I would share a little information about us.

Shawn and Jennifer Chappelle started Uwharrie Books in August 2009 on Main St in Locust, NC. The Chappelles live in nearby Midland and are excited to be part of the growth of such a great community. Uwharrie Books offers new and used books, special orders, rare and collectible book service, local art and gifts, and a bakery café with free wifi. We host free community events every month including West Stanly Garden Club with The Weekly Post’s Plant Lady Joyce Lavene and the only book club in the area that allows its members to meet the author of their books – every month!
